Free Chinese Learning Tools

These free tools work in your browser, on any device, and are made by the team behind Mandarin Mosaic. The keyboard, the pinyin chart and the level test need no sign-up. The article generator emails your article to you, so it asks for an email address.

Which tool do you need?

  • You need to type some Chinese right now on a computer that isn't yours, or you don't want to install anything: use the online Chinese keyboard. To type Chinese everywhere on your own phone or computer, our guide to typing Chinese on any device shows how to add a pinyin keyboard.
  • You're learning pinyin or tones: click through the pinyin chart to hear how each syllable sounds in all four tones. Our guides to learning pinyin and the Mandarin tones explain the rules.
  • You're not sure what your level is: the Chinese level test estimates your HSK level from the words you know, and our post on HSK vs CEFR explains how the two scales compare.
  • You need the word for a relative: the relatives calculator gives the Chinese term for any relative, from 叔叔 to 亲家, and our post on family in Chinese has the everyday words in sentences.
  • You want something to read at your level: the article generator writes an article at your HSK level about any topic, or based on a link to an article you paste in.

Learning beyond the tools

The tools help with single tasks. To build a vocabulary you actually remember, Mandarin Mosaic, our app for iOS and Android, teaches words through sentences with one new word where possible, and reviews them with spaced repetition. See how the app works.
